What to do with those used gift cards

Recycla’s daughters got a lot of plastic gift cards for Christmas, which is an easy gift for grandparents, aunts, and uncles to give two middle schoolers. After all those iTunes cards were entered into the girls’ iTunes accounts, what remained was a stack of plastic cards that needed to be disposed of in some way.

Luckily, there’s no need to throw all that plastic in the trash. Depending on your time, inclination, and skills, you can either re-purpose the gift cards into new items or you can send them to a company that will recycle them for you.

If you’re feeling crafty, check out this post for a list of ideas for reusing plastic gift cards. And here are a few more ideas.

If you want to simply recycle the cards, send them to Earthworks, which will chop them up, melt the plastic bits, and create new plastic out of the old. No chemicals are used in the process! Mail in your used cards to:

Earthworks c/o Halprin Ind.
25840 Miles Road
Bedford, OH 44146
Send in just the cards — no rubber bands, paper clips, pieces of paper, etc.
Recycla is so happy to have found some options for dealing with the stack of used gift cards on her desk. She’ll be dropping them in an envelope and mailing them off this week.

  1. Thank YOU!! A much better option than just returning them to the retailer, who tends to just throw them in the trash! Wonderful!
